QUOTE
Mr Irwin, 44, died after being struck in the chest by the stingray's barb while he was filming a documentary in Queensland's Great Barrier Reef.

Paramedics from Cairns rushed to the scene but were unable to save him.

Mr Irwin was known for his television show The Crocodile Hunter and his work with native Australian wildlife.

Police in Queensland confirmed the environmentalist's death and said his family had been notified. Mr Irwin was married with two young children.

"It is believed that Mr Irwin collapsed after being stung by a stingray at Batt Reef off Port Douglas at about 1100 (0100 GMT)," a police statement quoted by AFP news agency said.

"His crew called for medical treatment and the Queensland medical helicopter responded. However Mr Irwin had died."

It was obvious he was going to be killed this way but a world without Steve Irwin is a duller place thats for sure!!!

It makes me wonder if it was actually filmed and how long it will take to hit the internet if it was. I can see it now -

(In Aussie accent)
" What this angry little stingray doesn't know is I'm gonna grab its tail and then aaggghhhhh......."

By over reacted do you mean made it interesting to thousands of kids and adults alike?

He has educated and made animals interesting to people that probably would not care if he had not have lived. He has created a legacy that is Australia Zoo.

Yes he was a nutter and called his kid Bindy but we all have our problems cry.gif

Gutted about this - no matter how the great man overreacted (I bet going to the cinema with him was even funnier than with Mikey) and how questionable some of his actions were (I'm thinking about the baby in one hand/croc food in the other incident), he undoubtedly had great enthusiasm and love for animals of all sorts and anyone who can enthuse and promote that kind of message has got to be a good person.
I'm pretty sure he would also want to go with his boots on doing what he loved rather than sucumb to a terminal illness or ill-health, so all respect to the great Steve-o and all that he did.
Crikey!

I used to detest this man with a passion when I first saw 'the crocodile hunter' on TV. After watching a show about Australia Zoo and how all the Money raised from 'the crocodile hunter' is used in the preservation of wild life, it became obvious that this man was not just in it for the fame and attention, but he really cared about something more important. He contributed more to the world in his short life than most people could even comprehend doing in a whole one.
I warmed to him further after witnessing the love and care that he was clearly overwhelmed by at the birth of his first child. It then became apparent to me that although i couldn't relate to this man as a showman - as a human being and caring father and husband he was clearly one to be admired and an example for all of us.

I have never been saddened quite so much by the death of someone I have never met and am sorry to see him go, he will me missed! cry.gif

I've just got back from Bestival on the Isle of Wight (highly recommended by the way) and on the Saturday they have a fancy dress competition. There must have been about 15 Steve Irwins walking around with an inflatable croc, safari shirt and shorts and a black armband!

The only one who got any grief was the bloke who went a bit far and had blood on his chest and a cardboard cut out stingray which was a little insensitive.
