Including pricing - The full version of the PlayStation 3 will be priced at US$600 (currently £325.00) in North America and Ä600 (currently $411.00) in Europe - read the article

Personally, I think there will be some die-hard PS fans out there, but it is priced way out of the range of other consoles.
My comparison to X360 goes X360 (with 20GB HDD) = £280 PS3 (with 20GB HDD) = £410 difference = £130, which is roughly 50% more. OK, I accept that the PS3 has a Blu-ray drive (X360's HD-DVD will be an add-on), but this will only help to drive the cost of games up. I reckon there's also only room for one HD format, if Blu-ray does not win (and let's face it, Sony doesn't have a good track record - Betamax, MiniDisc, PSP movies...), that's an expensive mistake. At least an add-on can be changed easily. I can't understand the logic behind this. Microsoft has already had a year of "foot in the door". My guess is PS is about to keel over and die (very slowly and painfully - especially for the die-hard Sony fans). There might well be a PS5, but I doubt they will maintain their current dominance and will have to fight hard if they want it back. -------------------- |

I dunno - Sony will get massive sales in Japan vs. XBox no matter what they put out - maybe their business model really doesn't rely on being price competitive? You are quite right about Blu-ray - they don't have a good track record and there is never room in this kind of industry for 2 formats - having said that I think I saw somewhere that there are no plans for games using HD-DVD on the X360 only movies - I don't know if that will make any difference though.

Take this with as many grains of salt as required...

From those specs, it isn't even worth going for the base pack! No HD out, no wireless LAN (mind you, for comparison, the X360 wireless is an optional add-on see Paul's earlier post)...
Call the vet, I think we have a sick horse! PS. There's a rumour around that the Wii will cost around US $200. With a name like that, would you have a Wii in your living room? This post has been edited by camsmith: May 11 2006, 04:35 PM -------------------- |

As an aside (and I haven't heard it mentioned recently), I heard a while back that PSP on the same wireless LAN would autoconf to act as controllers - which would be cool!

Why is the entry level model not capable of HDMI output? I know the Xbox360 Core system only came with composite cables but it wasn't heralded by Microsoft as the machine that would drive HiDef video playback into our homes. Sony have championed Blu-Ray as the HiDef format of the future but have made their base pack, the model most of their casual-gamer userbase will plump for, incapable of this. I'm not doubting it will still sell, but a lot of people are going to be disappointed.

I have a PS3 lanyard. I have my pass-key for Procaps on it.
I don't have anything else interesting to add. :) -------------------- Joey DeCaire
