Due to some recent un-savoury behavior we have slightly amended the way that new users are handled - new users will be able to post new topics and replies but all their posts will need to be approved by a moderator before 'going live'. The moderators will do our best to see that posts are approved as soon as reasonably possible and new users will be promoted to the 'Full Members' group (without these restrictions) once we are happy that they are not trouble makers!

And pray tell why it is necessary to restrict my right to post after being a member for over two years???
I think if I was going to spam the board I would have done it by now |

Hi Alex
All members with less than 10 posts and new members are now moderated - and as you had only 1 post in those 2 years that puts you firmly in that group. I had to spend an entire day sorting out problem when the forums (which I pay for and maintain on my own) were hacked, so if my restricting your 'rights' has put your nose out of joint I can only apologise profusely. I have moved you to the 'full members' group, with the same permissions as you had before. Hi James,
I have been thinking of a reply for the last week, as I have not wanted to give you bad advise. Untill recently I was running the Team Jolt forums and over the years I have been involved in a number forums type projects. In fact I closed down the Jolt forums earlier this year as first we were not really using it much any more and second I was having to spend more and more time administering the forums as forum spammers were hitting it hard. The best advise I can give is to appoint a number of forum moderators who can help you keep the forums running ok, a problem shared. Find trusted members of the community and give them the power to clean the forums up for you. The next advise is to use the more complicated registration process that makes sure the email address given actually exists and is used by them, plus a bit of obscured text they have to read on the screen to stop automated scripts. You may have already done this I do not remember your registration process. I don't think I have any more advise on the topic, except to say if people are still using your forums it is worth keeping them running as it gives a nice warm fuzzy feeling to know that you are contributing to the net in general and your friends in particular. I think that is all I have to say, except that if you want any help with the forums in future please feel free to ask me to help, most of my experience is with PhpBB not Invision, but I can sort out hosting and things like that if you needed. Regards Alex |

Thank you for the reply and offer of help Alex. We already have all the things you have mentioned (modrators, captcha, email validation etc.) and none of those would have helped with the particular attack we came under - hence why I changed the way that new registrations were handled.
